Eye Level Is Buy Level: Where To Place Items on a Shelf

Product display is very important in a retail store. Customers enter the store because they need to buy items, so it’s important to make the process easier for them. Shoppers don’t want to feel like they’re on a scavenger hunt when they enter a store; keep things accessible and easy. We can tell you where to place items on a shelf. Here’s a hint: eye level is buy level.

Observe the Store’s Layout

Survey the layout of your store. Determine if the current design is suitable for shoppers and the demographic you want to attract. There might be an opportunity to reconfigure the layout, so run the finances during your observation.

Determine your best-selling items and which ones are the worst. Some of those sales might have a lot to do with their placement. You might consider reorganizing the store to improve the financial records.

Evaluate the Shopper

Next, you should consider and evaluate the shopper. Who is the target audience for the product? For example, if senior citizens are the target audience, keep the items at a medium height so customers don’t need to overstretch or stoop too low.

Consider the potential strain on their bodies. If your demographic is kids, place items lower to be at their eye level. Once they spot their prize, they can beg their parents to buy the item.

Choose a Level

Figuring out which level to choose is easy. There are four levels all retail owners should know about. Understanding the meaning behind each one makes it easier to decide where to place products.

Stoop Level

The stoop level is below 0.9 meters. Most shoppers dislike this level because they have to bend down, and the items are not in their field of vision. Never place any products for the elderly or disabled at this level. Shoppers only look this low as a last resort.

Touch Level

The touch level is between 0.9-1.2 meters. As you can imagine, this level is perfect for kids because they usually pick up everything in a store. At this height, they have easy access to all their favorite things. Place candies and toys at this level.

Stretch Level

The stretch level sits above 1.8 meters. Products placed on a shelf at this height receive little to no attention. You can place extras and backup items you’ll need to replace at stretch level. Not everyone is a basketball star, so reserve this level for additional inventory.

Eye Level

The best level of all is eye level. It’s between 1.2-1.5 meters, and it’s where all adults are shopping. Keep the popular items at this height. Place the retail store sign holders at this level, too. Make sure they’re in good condition and readable for all shoppers.
